ImageThe film begins on an ominous note. Eerie strings play as the film fades to white. Soon, a ship appears out of the fog. Cut to a gumshoe, looking and speaking as if he has stepped straight out of a [[Mickey Spillane]] novel (fitting, since the setting is 1954), trying to hold himself together and fight off a case of severe sickness (ìall that waterî) in the shipís bathroom. It turns out the gumshoe, US Marshall Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) are being ferried to one Shutter Island, rock island in the middle of Boston Harbor-one that houses an institution for the criminally insane.

So begins ìShutter Islandî, a haunting, challenging thriller by master filmmaker Martin Scorsese. Teddy and his partner are there seemingly to investigate the disappearance of a female patient-but Teddy has personal reasons of his own for taking the case. Though it appears at first that Teddy is a gifted investigator, it seems that every lead he follows only opens multiple other doors. Soon, Teddy is battling suspicious doctors, a downright sinister warden, a hurricane that descends on the island and, most critically, his own neurosis as he strives for the truth. As seeming clues lead nowhere and the twists in the case only multiply, Teddy soon begins to question everything around him, including his own sanity.

DVD review: Days of Vengence PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 18 June 2010 12:40
ImageInterestingly, the familiarity of ìDay of Vengeanceî is what separates it from many other low budget independent films. Where as many low budget indies tend to veer either into serious coming of age dramas, obscure mind trips, or horror, ìDay of Vengeanceî is more straightforward in its attempt to stage a modern day Western. While the film is clearly hampered by its low budget and (admittedly) amateurish acting, it is still a noble effort and effective debut for director Isaac Pingree.

The plot resembles that of a vintage western: a young hitchhiker named Jake Reid travels to the small town of Covelo, CA (note: an actual town) to uncover information about a botched robbery that led to the death of his father, as well as 3 other men. Though the townspeople clearly want to keep this grim moment in the past buried, Jake is determined to get answers-as well as find the missing loot. Jake eventually finds one reluctant ally in the town in Laura (who, as a child, saw her father killed in the aftermath of the botched robbery shootout). Soon, old wounds are opened, culminating in the local police, one outlaw who survived the shootout, and trigger-happy locals all clashing, with Jake and Laura caught in the crossfire.

The Future Of Electronic Delivery Is Now PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 11 June 2010 11:32
The statement from the Time-Warner CFO that the studio was ìaggressivelyî transitioning away from packaged media is just the latest indication that the future of electronic delivery of movies is pretty much upon us. Sales of dvds and blu ray have been falling for years. Now fueled by a recession that seems to have no end, that drop has become a plummet. Distributors of finished goods scramble to compensate for the reduced revenue per title by releasing ever more filmsóan approach that exhausts consumers and inevitably waters down the quality of new releases with too many mediocre films. The other trend that drives current release strategy is the obsession with cast driven product; as if ìBî grade actors never make a bad film. What these trends have given us is a cluttered market full of mediocre and even bad films with very little room for innovation and creativity. The only growth area for packaged media is kiosks like Redbox. Unfortunately the wholesale price these new outlets are willing to pay is so low, and their shelf/inventory space so limited, that they donít come close to making up for all the revenue lost in other areas of home entertainment. They do however offer the average consumer the cheapest method to legally watch a movie; albeit usually a very predictable one. Bland selection or not, this price advantage and the ongoing recession mean that these kiosks are going to be with us for some time to come, whether the studios and other big dvd distributors like them or not.

This brings us to the future that we are already living. In this distributorís opinion, there are three things slowing down the tidal surge towards electronic delivery of home entertainment. The first of these, with the notable exception of InDemand,  is the absence of any meaningful presentation strategies by the Video On Demand services. Available titles, particularly new releases, are lumped together with almost no sorting or categorizing. Such a cluttered presentation makes the need for effective searching software and hardware ever more imperative. Unfortunately, neither the software or hardware currently available to consumers is up to the task.

This situation is the second reason that  v.o.d. has still not completely overwhelmed packaged media. Whereas any gamer has a wireless hand controller that can interact in very specific ways with the game console and the television, most v.o.d. consumers only have their rather archaic remote to use as an interface. How long will it be before the cable companies introduce a wireless mouse-type device that will solve this problem? I predict such devices will be available by the end of this year. On the other hand it is hard to believe that such devices arenít already in use.

DVD Review: Crazy Heart PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 07 June 2010 11:41
ImageIn my Oscar predictions, my one wish for a ìdo-overî was my Best Actor prediction of Jeremy Renner for ìThe Hurt Lockerî over Jeff Bridges in ìCrazy Heart.î Though Renner gives a great performance, Bridges was clearly the sentimental favorite and-now judging first hand-deserved it.

One of the best methods for judging a performance is how believable you find the performance. Much like Bridges truly IS The Dude in ìThe Big Lebowski,î he truly IS Bad Blake in ìCrazy Heart.î There is not one false note in his portrayal of a washed up, drunken country singer barely surviving on the remnants of his past glory.

Much of the story is one weíve seen before: country singer on the road strikes up a star-crossed romance with a beautiful young woman, only to have the sins of his past come back to haunt him. The greatness of Bridgesí performance (coupled with subtle but very strong work by Maggie Gyllenhall as Jean) breathes new life into the story and makes the audience care. Blakeís now oft-quoted line to Jean, "I want to talk about how bad you make this room look" works because of Blakeís delivery and Jeanís blushing but smitten reaction. The line could have been sappy, but the acting makes it work.
