Top 5 Sexy Scenes of 2009 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

When one of the most memorable nude scenes of the year involves a middle aged, balding, overweight flasher (Observe and Report), you can easily surmise that 2009 was a year lacking in sizzle at the box office. Furthermore, of what I consider the most memorable sexy scenes in 2009, only one involved a major studio project. Whatever the reason (political or otherwise), 2009 was a weak year for sex in the cinema.

The top 5:

Watchmen

Hands down (at least to me) the best movie sex scene in 2009 was the lovemaking session between Silk Spectre II and Nite Owl on board the Nite Owlís ship. Malin Ackerman is stunningly beautiful in or out of her costume. The love scene is also given a surprising sadness and poignancy as it is accompanied by Leonard Cohenís ìHallelujahî on the soundtrack.

Holiday Price Wars and Dvd PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bruce Frigeri
Tuesday, 08 December 2009 14:39

The price war between Amazon and Walmart.com that began in October over best selling books has now spread to dvd and beyond. Recent articles cite price drops for items as diverse as Hasbro ovens and electronic components. Now Target has even joined in for select products as well as most dvd. Many observers believe that Walmart initiated this confrontation in an attempt to defend market share against the ever growing power of E Commerce. This is all well and good, but the enormous market share that these retail giants control, especially Walmart and Amazon, means that there is now tremendous price pressure on independent dvd titles whether they are carried by Walmart and Target or not.

This price pressure might seem like itís a good thing for consumers, and maybe in the short run it is. But the economics of independent film production and distribution simply cannot sustain itself at a retail price point that is rapidly approaching ten dollars per unit. Amazon, with its endless inventory capacity, is by far the largest retailer of independent film product. As a result it has tremendous influence on consumer expectations. If they persist in offering just about every title at these hugely discounted prices, it wonít be long before they stop eating their loss leaders and simply refuse to pay the traditional wholesale price. Netflix, the other main outlet for independent and imported films, is already cutting back on the number of units they bring in and can hardly be expected to pick up the slack. So when Amazon starts squeezing suppliers, the already crippled independent film sector will be on life support. Other sell thru websites and retail outlets will be forced to match price with Amazon, Walmart and Target. Most of them will simply demand the same reduced wholesale price that Amazon, Walmart and Target will be getting, further pressuring already cash strapped independent distributors and producers.

Top 10 Vampire Films PDF Print E-mail
Written by Trent Daniel

Since, in the wake of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, vampires are all the rage, I thought I offer a little list for those who would like to see good vampire films that exist outside of the trappings of the teen romance novel (warning: most of these films listed below are not about ìniceî vampires like Edward).

ImageNosferatu (Murnau, 1922)
The first notable vampire film is still the best and remains the measuring stick by which all vampire films are measured. Max Schreckís legendary Count Orlok remains a fearsome presence (not romantic, but rat like, which is fitting because the vampireís origins are link to disease and death; the count indeed sleeps in a grave filled with dirt from the graves of those lost to the Plague). Many moments, such as the countís clawing shadow on the wall and his rise from his coffin on a doomed ship, remain frightening.

Top 10 BW Films- In Defense of BW PDF Print E-mail
Written by Trent Daniel
Tuesday, 17 November 2009 11:32
Nowadays, black and white films are simply dismissed as ìoldî films, at a time when producers perhaps could not afford color film. Ted Turner, for instance, once experimented with ìcolorization,î a process that digitally altered black and white films into color.

However, some of the greatest films ever made simply have to be seen in black and white to be fully appreciated, as they all make full use of the lack of color to enhance their films (Citizen Kane director [[Orson Wells]], near the end of his life, famously told his friend [[Peter Bogdanovich]] to ìKeep Ted Turner and his G## D### crayons away from my movie.î)

To follow are 10 masterpieces for which the lack of color is not a detriment to their power and beauty, but an asset:

1. M (Lang; 1931)
One of the first great crime dramas (and first great talking pictures) is still chillingly effective. This grim story of a child killer on the loose in a German town achieves greatness through both Peter Lorreís unforgettable performance and the stark black and white photography. Characters in crowded rooms often seem engulfed in a haze of tobacco smoke. Furthermore, in the unforgettable finale, the killer is trapped in a large basement, surrounded by blackness, save for the hideous, grimy faces of the criminal underground (who find the murders bad for business and thus, have formed an unforgiving jury).
